The Need
The greatest humanitarian crisis of our times is in sub-Saharan Africa. The HIV/AIDS pandemic is ravishing this continent. The sad but true facts are that today…
- Families are disappearing
- Orphans are raising orphans
- Food and shelter is scarce
- Orphans are educationally deprived
- Health care is limited
- Premature death is rampant
- There is no hope for many…

The scope of Aids in Sub-Saharan Africa is mind boggling. An estimated 6% of the population between the ages of 15 and 45 is HIV positive – 25 million people. The sad fact is that these young adults have left behind 12 million orphans, a figure that continues to rise (UNAIDS, 2006).
In Africa a decade ago, orphans were invisible because extended families cared for them. Now communities are so devastated by AIDS that the traditional support system has almost disappeared. The old and the young survive, but they can not support themselves much less the magnitude of orphans in sub-Saharan Africa.

Every day more then 9,500 people die of AIDS worldwide. Every hour an estimated 750 people become infected. Every minute a child dies of the virus (UNAIDS, 2006). The vast majority of them are in sub-Saharan Africa, where the devastation is so acute that it has become one of the main obstacles to development.
